Actually that is not entirely true. One time we were at a music festival and someone had some cool mangoes so we cut them in half and we each got a half with a spoon. I scooped the meat out of that mango and ate it. That was the best taste I could have experienced at that moment and that one time I really loved mango. I have tried to recreate that taste cutting a mango in half and eating it with a spoon but it did nothing. There was no was to get back that moment.

This drink will probably be loved by anyone who likes to eat mangoes but if you don't then maybe you should opt out.Raynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17434855725619739954noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1599456340747826238.post-65641817498752491872008-07-23T11:20:00.000-07:002008-07-23T20:01:10.035-07:00Soup in a can
The best thing about this stuff was the little plastic folding spoon that fit into the lid. Seriously it was not good. It's basically just some rice and beans made into a soup with some broth but then someone decided to add something sweet, mostly just sugar and quite a bit of it or at least more of it than should be in soup maybe if it was some kind of dessert but then why have beans and rice in it? Anyway not tasty but to my surprise it came with a spoon which folded up and fit into the lid. Now if we just find a soup that tastes good with the spoon it would be a great on the go food. I like to grill a big portobello mushroom and put it on a bun and eat it like a burger sometimes even more than I like actually eating hamburger meat. Now I am not a vegetarian I am far from it, I like meat very much but I love mushrooms. All that being said these are not the best ones I have eaten.
We added these mushrooms to a little dish Scott whipped up with some green curry and some bamboo shoots. He has been working on getting it just right, he thought he got it this time I still think it was spicy hot but maybe green curry just is not for me. I need to order it out at a restaurant some time but I do not want to waste the money on something I do not like. Oh well I guess I will have to cross that bridge when I come to it or more likely when I am in another restaurant that serves a green curry dish.
Anyway these mushrooms are dirty. They taste like they were not cleaned at all before they were put into the can. I do not think you have to clean things you take out of a can but maybe I am wrong. They not only tasted dirty literally, kind of gritty other than that they did not have much taste at all and that is what scares me. Maybe they were supposed to taste like that and if so I definitely do not like them or recommend them.Raynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17434855725619739954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1599456340747826238.post-43388071968078802742008-07-16T13:23:00.000-07:002008-07-16T13:23:00.313-07:00It's Nutty - White Gourd Juice

Smells like Chocolate and a little nutty. The only things listed on the side of the can are White Gourd, Water and Sugar. I guess a pumpkin has a sort of nutty flavor. These are just a bunch of chopsticks. We were going to buy a bag of those wooden ones that they give you in restaurants but then we thought for just a few cents more we could get these awesome plastic ones and so why not? I do not know what anyone would even need with ten sets of chopsticks (outside a party of course) but that is how many came in this package and it wasn't the smallest one available either. The directions state 1. Please sterilize it by boiling water. this is interesting because you do not have to put them in the water you just need to boil the water and then the chopsticks are miraculously sterilized. 2. Be sure to put chopsticks flat. I do not know what happens if you don't and by-the-way flat on what and when? 3. If there is oil spots, please clean it with cleaner? what oil spots exactly would those be? and why not boiling water?

I have so many things floating around in my head when I read these packages I wonder if other people think them too.
Raynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17434855725619739954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1599456340747826238.post-27907574679679208472008-07-11T12:34:00.000-07:002008-07-11T12:34:01.015-07:00He always picks the good ones

Last time we went to the Asian Food Market both my husband and I picked one drink we knew we liked and one drink we have never had before. It is only the second ingredient and they are already using the name in the definition. I looked everywhere and still can not find the definition of Pearl Starch Ball. Oh those where the days. There was an Asian American woman where I used to work she was lactose intolerant and she would bring in this drink to go with her lunch. Basically it is soymilk but this version is much sweeter than any I have ever tasted before. At first because I was not used to drinking soy milk it tasted like regular milk that had been watered down with sweetener added but now it has developed a taste all its own. According to the ingredients all that is inside the can is soymilk and sugar cane. I have heard that this is something children would drink in Asian but I do not know that for sure.
Every time I go tot he Asian Food Market I always pick up a can of this drink. At least I know that I will like one thing that I come home with.
Raynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17434855725619739954noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1599456340747826238.post-28997704203248700102008-07-08T12:26:00.000-07:002008-07-08T12:26:00.945-07:00Drink - Mandarin Orange Drink This is my husbands favorite Asian drink. He lived in Japan for two years as a teenager and during that time he drank quite a bit of it, as I understand. He says you could buy it from vending machines all over. It is orange juice pretty much the same orange juice you would find at any grocery store but with a twist. It has a super amount of pulp in it. Somehow they have been able to keep the little juice filled bubbles in an orange intact so that you sort of drink and eat this orange juice. when you tip the can up you get juice filled with the little orange juice bubbles.

If you like Orange juice with pulp then you should try this, if not skip it. It tastes like orange juice but I don't like to eat my drinks and so I am not a huge fan. The thought of ordering it from a vending machine is pretty cool though. Maybe when we go to Japan if you can still get it from a machine I will try it again.

Raynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17434855725619739954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1599456340747826238.post-8735622424381077642008-07-07T12:11:00.000-07:002008-07-07T12:11:00.476-07:00Hom Bao from the bakery

I have had Hom Bao before at a few Dim Sum restaurants. Usually it is filled with BBQ Pork or Beef or at least the times I have eaten it that is what was inside. Also usually it is good. Basically Hom Bao is a sticky bun filled with whatever you choose or more accurately whatever the cook chooses. I very much enjoyed the buns I had in the past and so picked these up last time we were at the market. This was a very bad idea. The Hom Bao of the day were not filled with BBQ or anything like it. The sign above them read "Pork" and I am sure this is true but they were not tasty BBQ pork they were filled with something more akin to pork innards. And by that I mean after taking a bit you could clearly taste and see the intestines and something yellow and egg like. I do not know what it was and I am not going to waste more time on the Internet to find out.

There were two different kinds of Hom Bao at the bakery that day we picked the ones sitting nicely on the plastic try covered with Saran wrap, the one with the nice "pork" sign. Next time we will try the smaller ones in little plastic sandwich bags.

Lesson: just because it has a sign and better presentation does not mean it tastes better.
Raynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17434855725619739954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1599456340747826238.post-60390256390615863882008-07-06T20:04:00.000-07:002008-07-06T20:04:01.030-07:00Frozen Chicken Gyoza
We picked these up on our last trip to the Food Market. The first time we went there we bought some pork Gyoza but although they were good these chicken ones are much better. This time we fried them up in the Wok for 10 to 15 minutes and that was it. I do not even think we used any oil or anything. On the back of the package it gives instructions for Microwave and although that would make it faster to eat I just do not think they would taste very good that way. There are also instructions for Gyoza soup maybe I will try to do this sometime.

Gyoza are dumplings filled with a different item, like chicken in these. The dough is a bit wet not like most American foods where the dough would be dry. I am not a big fan of the wet aspect but if you cook them a little longer than the package calls for then they dry out a little more. That is the way I like them. The main ingredient of the filling is cabbage which I would not have guessed.

The bottom line is they are tasty and I give them two thumbs up. One of the best foods I have eaten on this little adventure so far.
Raynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17434855725619739954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1599456340747826238.post-63238587086974117742008-07-04T12:15:00.000-07:002008-07-04T12:26:59.992-07:00The adventure beginsI was was not introduced to Asian food much as a child but as I have experienced it through my life I like it more and more. I venture out to Japanese and Chinese food restaurants every once in a while but I was just recently introduced to the Asian Food Market. A grocery store full of nothing but authentic Asian food. Most of these items I am not familiar with. I do not know how to cook them or how to eat them or for the most part what they are made of in any way. The writing on most of the packages does not include a word of English. My husband and I have decided to do more of our weekly grocery shopping at this store. Why? Because we like a little adventure, it is a way to expand our minds, our palettes and feed our stomachs. So I invite you to join us. In this blog I am going to write about the different products we find in our trips to the Asian Food Market as well as any dishes that we make form these items and other fun things that may happen along the way.Raynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17434855725619739954noreply@blogger.com0
